And to think we left these people to their own demise after WWII, and yet the invasion of their country was the very catalyst for declaring war in the first place. I’ve never quite understood how we haven’t had a much closer relationship and commitment to Poland.

There’s a very real bias against Central and Eastern Europeans. They are viewed as ignorant and working class and overly religious (kind of how flyover country is viewed by coastal elites here).
A good example of this is how beloved Rafael Nadal (Spain) and Roger Federer (Switzerland) are compared to Novak Djokovic (Serbian) even though all three have similar success, looks, and personal qualities.
