i jsut want to know why if i refer to someone as a queer i would almost certainly be accused of hate speech, but it's right there in the acronym

An entirely-valid question.

Seems a bit disingenuous, if the same person both claims a label for himself (any label) and then feigns righteous indignation when others use the same label to describe him.

Gay guys in my dorm quickly recognized that I was not biased so they befriended me and taught me about gay culture. The rule on terms was simple...'gay' and 'queer' are perfectly fine. 'Homo' and '****' were not permitted at all.

This was back in the 60s so the idea that 'queer' is seen as new today is absurd.
