It needs to be investigated and preserved. Way too many questions and not enough answers about our past.
Truth be told, Elon probably should step in and fund this to keep governments out of it.

No, it’s a difference in the perspective of modern archeology, which has come a long way since Troy was turned into a trash heap. Portions of sites are now intentionally left alone because we understand that future technology might uncover things current technology can’t. But, if we dig it all up now, that ship sails. Pompeii, which has all the funding in the world, still has large swaths that are untouched for that reason.
