until effective leadership returns to New Orleans and Baton Rouge and crime and lawlessness is reigned in, both cities are in bad shape

you may think it's in isolated areas but it's not
when you have a carjacking in new orleans that killed that lady in broad daylight in an area that is not known for that type of violence it's bad!
when you have crime in areas of Baton Rouge that are usually pretty safe to be in it's bad!

Bingo.

This same shop owner last year sent a memo out to black owned businesses downtown (or at least, ones he thought were black owned) trying to get them to form some sort of a union or coalition or pact or some shite to support each other and negotiate rent together or some bs.

I also have it on good authority that he was being evicted for not paying rent. The urban succulents and pencil holder businesses just weren't bringing in the cash.

BUT... there are plenty of businesses running from downtown bc of the issues he is pointing out.
