Per the Guardian, it appears the Archbishop is seeking 100 million to cover the claims. A large portion of that will now come from parents who paying tuition for their kids and donations from parishioners.
100 mil is probably just the church’s share. There will likely be insurance money too.
There is a lot of precedent for how this will play out. For the dozens of other archdiocese’s that have gone through this, across the country, the cost ranges from $50,000 to $350,000 per claimant. That would put the top end at @150mil for New Orleans.
And getting the Vatican to chip in does not appear to be in the cards. I don’t think there is any precedent for that and really don’t think New Orleans is going to change anything.
I’m left with the moral dilemma.
?
To think that money that I give to the church goes toward paying off sexual molestation claims, is disgusting to me.
Is my charitable giving to the church a justifiable, moral contribution or am I giving to an immoral institution?
Bottom line- is it a sin to give money to any institution which is using that money to pay off sexual molestation victims?
