I don't think I've encountered this variant of wasp before. I'm intimately familiar with red wasps and yellow jackets, which I've been stung by on many occasion. These little frickers are twice as nasty as the red variety.

We had a problem with that exact variety of wasp a couple of summers ago.
The little bastards are extremely aggressive, and will leave the nest to attack if you just walk up too close to it. They are the only wasp/yellow jacket/hornet variety I have ever encountered that would launch an unprovoked attack.
Well done sir. Hopefully there were no survivors.
