We got back from a weekend trip to MS Monday and everything was fine. Wake up yesterday and the unit won't turn on. I service the unit 2x/year usually and had a spring service a few months ago. Same company sends a tech out and he replaces a capacitor. Does another check of the main unit and the outside unit (sorry I don't know the technical terms right now) and it runs fine.

Middle of the night, the main unit (in the attic) is making a humming sound like it's coming on but the outside unit doesn't seem to want to join. I turn it off.

What am I looking at? I'm calling them at 8am just trying to brace myself for cost/time estimates.

*ETA: the motor went out. Not great but not worst case scenario.

Could be a bad capacitor or a flow switch problem. Hopefully not a compressor failure.

Cross your fingers its just the capacitor, and you should always have a spare one on hand to DIY.

What would I be looking at there? Google has a wide range (900-3k) and they're always low. Also curious how long it would take if anyone knows.

I hope it's not but I'm just trying to figure out contingencies like hotel/airbnb, etc.

FYI you can buy a motor for $150-300 depending on the one you need and change it yourself, its like 4 screws and a couple wire swaps.

I'm sure the tech is going to try and charge you $1000.
