I despise thieves.
Had a bunch of very important, especially sentimental, stuff stolen from us (here at our farm house property) while we were living in Hawaii.
Caught the thief, tried and convicted and sentenced to prison. He had anlong rap sheet (his name is William Otis Mitchum). He stole all my medals and military memorabilia from my time served at Bragg and overseas. Stole all my hunting clothes. Stoles valuable pictures and paintings and prints. He made multiple trips. It was all being stored in a guest house here on the property.
Judge threw the book at him but he was still released early.
There's more to the story since.
One of the clues that helped us catch him was all of my hunting clothes and boots he stole ... I'm 6'3" and wear a size 16 shoe. He ended-up being 6'5" and he wears a size 15 shoe. I gotta give it to the detective for that.
That and a lot of other things.
Never recovered anything ... he claimed he was on crack and couldn't remember where he sold it all and that some of it burned-up in a fire.
Heart breaking.
IMHO the Muslims have it right. Thieves get caught three times stealing, lop a hand off. Four times, lop the other hand off. Five times ... take the nugget.

We have a prohibition against "cruel and unusal punishment" in our country, but I fail to see how we define cruel and unusual. If the criminal commits a crime - burglary, robbery, drug trafficing, rape, murder, torture... isnt that the criminal saying "I personally don't find this cruel or I wouldn't do it", thus making it ok to do something drastic to that person?
Also, by drastic, I don't mean truly cruel (IE feed them to pirhanas, draw & quarter, etc...) but perhaps a long prison sentence without air conditioning, soft bed, gymnasium, hot food, etc.
If you go to prison for serious stuff, you should be seriously punished. Concrete floor, latrine-hole in floor, 6x6" window.
