I've done a non-pre charged line set install and it's not bad.
Get you a flaring kit from one of your local auto stores (O'reilly has a free rental program) and get you quality brass fittings from hardware store. You'll need a union compression fitting for each of the lines you're trying to extend. I'd never done it before and watched a few videos on Y/T and did a few practice ones on extra line set. Worked out great.
Call a tech to come charge the line after you release the gas that is in the compressor with the unit you buy. Just get a unit with common freon.
