funeral homes really do take advantage of you

it's been 26 years but, i still remember going off on the person at the funeral home when they told me it would have cost half as much if we had made the deal BEFORE she died.

Some of that is because the funeral home acts like a loan shark for insurance premiums. The expend the money for a casket, their services, cards, etc. They file for the death certificate and then file for life insurance policy. Once they collect the money from the life insurance company, they send you a check for what is left from the proceeds of the insurance payout.

In most cases, they will not pay for a burial plot. For that some cemetaries want cash in hand before burial.

On a side point, I received a letter last week concerning a life insurance policy my dad had with life insurance company that went belly up and was absorbed by a larger company. Crazy thing is that he has been deceased for 7 years now, did the funeral home screw up and miss a policy that he had.
