6-4 Ohio State playing 5-5 USC in November isn't going to be deemed marquee anymore. The big schools stand on the shoulders of the smaller ones. Wins matter. These "marquee" programs roll into November with losing records their games stop being hyped. Only the fans of those teams are left to care and guess what many of them check out then as well.

Also marquee CFB matches are mostly watched by college football fans. If you ostracize ~50% of the field their fans are going to stop caring and watching other games. I'm a WVU alum and fan that likes to watch marquee matchups outside of my team. If WVU stops getting a seat at the table I'll stop watching college football all together.

I would estimate the majority of fans whose favorite teams are the tier 2 teams and below will stop watching games as well if their team doesn't have a seat at the table.
