2nd round picks and undrafted guys don't become RFA's when their rookie contract is up like 1st round picks. They become unrestricted free agents free to sign with anyone.

Can you point me to a source? Because I don't think that this is quite right.

If I remember correctly, 1st-round picks are given fully-guaranteed contracts, but there's nothing that prevents a 2nd-round pick from getting one, and I think we gave Herb the same kind of contract that he'd have gotten if he were a 1st-round pick.

I'm pretty sure that Herb was going to be a RFA after next season, if we hadn't declined the option to sign him to a new deal.

Just did some research, Teddy is wrong. Any player who’s been in the league for three years or less that isn’t a first round pick is a restricted free agent. So Herb would still have been a restricted free agent next season.

It’s 100% not correct as a blanket statement. Austin Reaves was just a high profile restricted free agent after his 2 year contract with the Lakers. Even two-way players are often restricted free agents.

There’s language on the nba website about restricted free agency that I interpret to mean: any player whose contract expires after playing 3 or less seasons becomes a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted free agent (pending qualifying offer when applicable)
