Any Brit or Aussie trying to do a Southern or working class NY/Northeastern accent will 99% be an abomination beyond belief.

In saying that, the absolute most horrific attempt at a southern accent in recent memory is that American blonde biotch from 1883.... Who narrated entire fricking show.

It's so bad it's comical.

...

As for best... (and I know it's cheating) but McCoughnahey in Mud is probably the best recent representation of working class/redneck/common man South Arkansas /deep south/east Texas/North LA I can think of. LINK

Old school 1990s Billy Bob (Hearts Afire and Tombstone, etc) is also the best pure Arkansas accent ever put on film (obviously).

After Sling Blade fame, he started to lose his accent.

The Southern accent is closest to a British accent than any other American accent.

Kelly Macdonald is a Brit and an exception to this, she nailed her Southern accent in No Country.
