Moneyball Athletics started almost all of the stat crunching in sports. It all started with baseball, but now it’s in every sport. Stats add objectivity to talent evaluation and scheme fit much better than eye ball tests. The issue is separating inconsistent stats from sticky stats. Dependent variables from independent variables. Basketball has a lot more dependent variables than independent, so it’s less stat focused. Football is seeing a breakthrough on independent (sticky) stats like on-target percentage for QBs rather than completion percentage
