What statistics? What assumptions are we using in your scenario?

In game decisions are not made in a vacuum. Relying strictly on historical outcomes ignores the fact that decisions are a function of risk and reward, and that you are in the same position as the the statistics you are relying upon were derived. I mean I think “statistics” can basically be thrown out the window just based on the anecdotal observation that we are a below average bunting team.

Statistics suggest that nobody would ever win money at a casino. Not only do people still gamble, some actually win.
