I don’t know why the ball would have to be “not touching any part of the grid” to be called a ball. The size of the dot is irrelevant.

If the center of the dot is outside the outer grid, it’s a ball (per the graphic anyhow). If the center of the dot is inside the outer grid, it’s a strike.

Again though - for like the 3rd time - it’s safe to assume that anything extremely close to the outer line is going to be a judgment call, or at minimum that the accuracy of ESPN’s pitch placement comes into question.
