The amendment played a central role in building up the powerful American federal government of the twentieth century by making it possible to enact a modern, nationwide income tax. Before its adoption, the federal government collected most of its revenue from tariffs and excise taxes, which was largely seen as unfair. The income tax became by far the federal government's largest source of revenue before long.
Bastards. Fitting this was added right before the 17th amendment making Senators part of the popular vote. These two amendments can go away.
