I don't think I ever knew if you had given him any money or not? If so, did they pay you back?

If those answers are yes and no, I'd be furious that they were going on vacation right now.

That’s the worst part about the scenario, it tends to make the giver/lender the de facto trustee or auditor of the recipient, which can be problematic and awkward.

I’d say if giving, give and forget about. If lending, keep it simple and clear with specific date(s) for repayments or at least updates on progress.
