Your mileage may vary, buuuuuuttt...I'd skip Sedona altogether unless you're staying in a posh spa. It was PCB with a flair for turquoise in town.
I had a great time staying in Flagstaff (at the Little America) and then we booked a night in a cabin on the rim at the Bright Angel Lodge. Amazing sunrise/set views. Stick around and take a donkey trip to the floor of the canyon. You can stay the night (they'll cook dinner and bfast) and then ride back up.
