On the Road is an excellent idea if he hasn't read it.
Maybe something like the collected short stories of Ernest Hemingway would appeal to him. They are set in lots of different places from Europe to Africa to America. Maybe let him read one or two like "A Clean Well Lighted Place" and "Big Two Hearted River" first to see if Hemingway's writing appeals to his taste.
For WWII, if he hasn't read them yet, With the Old Breed by Sledge and Helmet for my Pillow by Leckie are both really great reads.
