"Maleveto" vs. "Tepperini"

All this crap about "Maleveto" is oddly similar, and just as stupid, as the "Tepperini" we heard last year. Of course we won the national championship and he got a primo head coaching job. Many were happy to see him go. I was not among them and I am not ready to call for an end to the current arrangement. Would our defense be better under Pelini? Does one man make that much difference, when the schemes and terminology are the same? These coaches that played an active role in last year's success, did they all of a sudden forget how to coach?

Pellini knew his d TO THE LEVEL THAT HE COULD ADJUST AND MAKE IT WORK WHERE OUR 2 CO-DCs can not.

Something is missing with our defense. I'm not saying it's as bad as 10 years ago, but we do play back off the WR's and we get little pressure on QB's. The statistics don't lie. Everytime you turnaround, whoever we've played, they most likely have a SEC Player of the Week.

The problem is that the current defensive regime is not very good against the spread offense. Pellini wasn't that great against it either. Florida moved the ball last year and even Ole Miss did well against us last year. And Arkansas, although they didn't run the spread, ran an unconventional offsense and we didn't have an answer for them for 3 years. Clearly, we do well against conventional offenses (i.e. Alabama). However, they get scored on early and often against the spread. I really think we need to get a DC that can figure out how to slow the spread down because it's going to become more and more prevalent in the next 5-10 years.

With the amount of talent we have on defense, there is no excuse for giving up:

34 Alabama (7 from ST)
24 Ole Miss (7 from ST?)
28 Arkansas
14 Auburn (HORRBILE team)
24 State
45 Florida
38 Georgia
24 Troy
ETA: This is off the top of my head, so correct me if any of these points were off of ST or from our offense.
27 Kentucky

38 Georgia

Scoring D 64th (24.90)
Pelini Stats
Total D 3rd (288.79)
Rush D 12th (106.07)
Pass D 9th (182.71)
Scoring D 17th (19.93)
Looking at the stats Pelini was obviously better, although not by as much as I thought. However, the 2 triple overtime games probably skew the numbers for Pelini, especially scoring D. Of course, I think Jarrett Lee's 42 points given up are credited to the scoring D as well.

Needless to say, your guy still isn't starting and I think he has actually regressed. I recall you didn't like Pelini and weren't too fond of Miles, even as we were winning the BCS title. Why don't you pick another team to follow?

Florida had 314 yards of offense last year (158 pass, 156 rushing), with Tebow completing less than 50% of his passes. While the D didn't dominate them, that's not so bad.

Those were some tough years. We had a good offense with Herb Tyler scoring lots of points, but of course, couldn't stop anybody.

You're right, the stats were better than I remembered. But, I also remember Ole Miss scoring at will late in the game with a Tennessee reject QB running the spread. I guess, maybe my main point is that we need to figure out how to stop (or at least slow down) the spread since it seems to be the trend for teams to use. Our DC's can't seem to slow it down, although the last quarter-and-a-half were promising (even if it was Troy).

I would agree. I don't think anyone is horribly surprised at who we lost to. But I think most Tiger fans are very surprised at how poorly our defense has looked not only in the Georgia and Florida losses, but in the Troy win as well (first 3.5 quarters).
