I think they left space there for maintenance.

Honestly Wal Mart should lease out their rooftops for these things. And people should put them on their homes. But we shouldn't be wasting land on this. They aren't farms. They are powerplants that will have to be decommissioned and cleaned up in a couple of decades.

European countries remove the old panels that don't work anymore and ship them to Africa to "donate solar panels". But all they are doing is shipping waste to those people to deal with.

My son did a high school project showing that using the electric poles as individual solar sites is enough to produce electricity without taking good farm/ranch land that produces food for humans and animals. Figure out how many poles are being used in the US and add what a solar panel will average per day. In reality it's not about electricity it is about locking up farm/ranch land and squeezing the food supply.
