Is there any precedent at all for drafting a player in MLB and having that player make the show that same season that was in progress when the draft took place?

Ben McDonald pitched in 5 or 6 games for Baltimore in ‘89.

Like others have said, it’s usually pitchers. I’m sure there are more recent position players, but I remember guys like Pete Incaveglia and Bob Horner doing it. But it’s different now with how much they invest in these guys and how much all teams, but especially small market ones like the Pirates, value having team control and will manipulate service time.

Dylan Crews could have been an every day player in the bigs LAST year imo. He certainly could this year. But I don’t think the Pirates would want to lose a year of team control unless they are ready to insert him right into the lineup. He will never be a back up—ever. On any level. If the big league club isn’t ready for him to play every day, he’ll do it in AA and/or AAA until they are. I’d imagine he’s in somebody’s Opening Day lineup next year.
