Frankly, when I think about how charismatic figures like David Koresh, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and Marshall Applewhite were able to dupe people even in the late 20th century, it blows my mind how so many millions (to billions) are willing to base their lives around ancient figures like Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and Joseph Smith and the things they supposedly did and experienced (for which there is little evidence) hundreds to thousands of years ago when the world was way more insane and ignorant than it is even now.

I don’t get it beyond the fact that cultural influences are very strong, as is the fear of death.
