So would all this Brandon Miller stuff be ok if Oats suspended him for a few measly games? Or some practices?
For me, the issue was a complete lack of accountability from top to bottom. The administration took the position that as long as there were no charges then Miller was good to go, but obviously there can be conduct warranting of discipline that doesn’t result in criminal charges. It was a dishonest, inconsistent position taken by the University in order to absolve themselves and Miller of any accountability.
The University also took the position they don’t investigate criminal matters, and because of that protocol they are ok not knowing whether Miller read the text message before delivering the gun (or they know the answer and are concealing it). However, as it concerns Miller, it’s not a criminal matter, so that whole justification for not investigating whether he was responding to the text to deliver the gun doesn’t exist.
Alabama AD went on College Gameday podcast and twice dodged the question on whether Miller knew he was going to deliver the gun - LINK, not even acknowledging that was a pertinent piece of information on which disciplinary decisions shoukd be based.
All signs point to Miller either read the text before delivering the gun or he plead the 5th when asked (if anyone even asked him). If that weren’t the case, his attorney would have shouted that from the roof tops.
As to what measure of discipline would have been acceptable in most people’s eyes, I think a week long suspension may have been just enough to avoid the intense scrutiny. To me though, aN expulsion from school was warranted.
