There are some good answers in the thread, but the main answer is really simple. Our psyche was built around being constantly in danger and constantly in need. This required us to be constantly busy preparing defenses, gathering food, and storing for hard times. None of this is necessary any more. We are free to indulge ourselves, and the lack of boundaries causes many of us to lose our minds.

Doesn't quite work that way. Lot of it has to do with stress. You could be at work busy as hell with no time to really think, and the smallest stupidest thing could set you off. If you get on medication, you handle the same situation differently. You can actually analyze things to where you go, that sucks and say oh well.
But medication takes away emotion. My uncle died unexpectedly a few months ago. Everybody was crying and I was like a bumb on a log. I felt guilty because I couldn't fell anything. When my dad died a few years ago, I was going through a phase I didn't want to take any meds. It happens. I was a wreck.
