You can blame Ole Miss all you want for gaming the rules, but don't blame the rules.
A regulation game is 7 completed innings, a completed game can be had after 4.5 innings if suspended prior to 7 complete innings and the coaches cannot agree to the game being halted and to be continued. Watching the LTU coaches interview it would appear Ole Miss; (1) did not put the tarp out which shows no intent to continue, (2) did not accept LTU's attempt to complete the game at a later date on LTU's dime, (3) did not move the game up outside the weather window when LTU presented the option. Ole Miss did nothing wrong by the letter. It's just not a good look for a coach/institution that over the last few years has shown they'll play in any grey area they can. They did nothing 'wrong', but also did everything the wrong way.

Unless this situation arises, which can benefit either team in the end. Obviously baseball's play benefits the home team in general, this included.

Completely agree, but also the umpire ultimately calls the game over, not the coaches. It sounds like tarping the infield wouldn't have mattered much because it rained all night, but they could have moved it up. I know I've seen LSU move games up all the time to avoid bad weather.

These aren't weird college rules, though. MLB uses the same basic rules, and even if the two teams were playing again the next day it would have been declared an official game with the 4-3 score holding up. They only resume games if it's not a full 5 innings or if the score is tied at the end of the last completed inning.
