When your entire existence is tied to the success of your college’s sports teams, you end up with Bama fans defending this.
This is the type of thing that you can try to bury in a smaller college town that would never happen in LA, Miami, or even Austin for that matter.

Accessory? He’s a full fledged accomplice in the murder. An accessory does something indirect and peripheral to the actual crime, such as hiding the gun afterwards.
An accomplice brings the gun to the scene of the crime, and prevents the victim escaping when things start escalating.
