Hell yeah they did…kids were getting paddled up through 8th grade in my school. Some of the teachers had wooden paddles with holes drilled in them for airflow. Most were pointless at that age but there were a couple of coaches that you sure as shite didn’t want to get paddled by… they’re pop you and it would sound like gunshot.
