I was in the first grade and snuck some matches out of our house so me and my buddies could start a fire in the vacant lot next door. On got a little out of control…meaning a a one foot diameter in pine straw…nothing major and we stomped it out…but a younger kid with us got scared and ran out into the street yelling Fire! Fire!

Mom and dad were waiting in the driveway and when they found out it was our matches that started it I got the belt. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I still don’t even start the grill without calling dad to make sure it’s alright.
