2003 was actually a decent slate of Best Picture nominees at the Oscar.
You had The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as the unstoppable juggernaut; but you also had solid films nominated alongside it such as Mystic River, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Seabiscuit, and Lost in Translation. That might have been the last truly great lineup of Best Picture nominees in terms of films that were widely seen by the public.
