We've been going to the St. Pete Beach/Treasure Island area for about 40 years. We routinely stayed at some mom and pop places along the beach then would take a day to drive over to Orlando for whatever theme park we wanted to visit that year.
St. Pete is a more laid-back vibe because it's more retired folks and a beach community.
ETA: The kids always enjoyed going up to John's Pass to see the fishing boats come in and all of the pelicans in the area. We'd also walk down to the "Pink Building" (The Don Cesar Hotel) and get ice cream.

Went to St Pete's this past year. I liked it because of how low key and didn't feel overrun with touristry beach goers. We stayed at the Cesar but next time might plan to stay at a boutique one "downtown".
