Not trying to blacksplain to you here BTW... I didn't stay in a Motel 6 last night or sleep in the ghetto in my truck, so I obviously have no standing...
Anyway... I think the story should have been told and it could have been a very powerful movie, if it had been done right... If it had had the right director it would have been better and if they had not tried to put words where there should not have been and pushed topics that did not even exist back then it might have made more sense...
Lol yes, I was being a bit laconic earlier, but exactly--the "black trauma" theme is compelling if done right. It comes off as disingenuous if it's not a good film, or the marketing for said property is heavily weighted towards exploiting said trauma simply for the sake of it. My favorite Chadwick Boseman (RIP) film is actually "42," because I felt that captured the essence of the message so well, not just the time.
For lack of a better way of phrasing it, such movies have to have a soul (pun intended).

You hit the nail on the head here... She thought this would guarantee an Oscar nod...
This film was so bad it was like she didn't even try to direct anything or what she did try to direct just seemed a chore...
I think that's what bugged people more (including myself). I haven't seen the film, have no plans to, but even movies I've enjoyed in the past (on any subject), I always hate when it's obviously a project aimed at award season. Just changes the whole tenor for me. Not that I care which movies win awards or not, but it just makes the whole experience feel like a means to an end, instead of focusing on making a good story for its own merit.
Idk, maybe I'll get around to watching "Till" at some point (doubtful) and have a completely different take, but as it stands right now, I just don't see the need.
