I understand ole baw.....I'm in the same boat. Mow WAY more than necessary. I do it to please the wife, she likes a well manicured lawn. I pass multiple times in the winter just to mulch leaves, etc.

I do a lazy form of composting in that I save up my produce scraps (non-citrus), egg shells, used tea leaves and coffee grounds and just spread it over the lawn every few days and mow it over.
Second, it's something I enjoy doing. Pop the earbuds in and make my lawn and garden pop. I take pride in my ability to landscape and maintain my outdoor spaces. I want my lawn to have crisp edges, no weeds, even green across the board front and back. If it's a special occasion I'll even mow out a pattern. When I pull in after a day's work, I want to tell myself "Damn, my house looks good."
Plus, during those spring and summer months, a quick rain here and there can delay a mowing schedule significantly.
