If it happened in high school/early college and hasn't happened since there's some leeway there.

But if you've cheated in a relationship after that, particularly in a serious one, I'm not touching that with a 10-foot-pole. Separating from a spouse (even if you can't afford the divorce) is far too easy at this point to excuse any kind of cheating while actively in a relationship.

I can't tell you how many couples I've worked with that tried to mend the relationship after cheating by one partner or the other and it's happened again.

Massive waste of time to bother trying to save a marriage after one cheats. Just go ahead and split up and move on. You will never fully regain that trust back.
