Not really.

When the time came for Carter to make that decision, there was an avenue available for him to go to the NFL after graduation. Now, months away from the draft, they’re saying there isn’t. That would have been good info for him to have when he decided to stay.

Plus, the congressman is pretending like there is someone out there who will never serve because Carter “took up an appointment”. That someone could have gone the ROTC or OCS path. He’s making an emotional argument with no basis in reality.

That’s not what they’re saying. They’re saying he should be required to fulfill his obligations. Then he can go to the NFL.

Randy Shannon, Mark Richt, and Tommy Tubberville used to host training camps overseas for deployed servicemen. Randy offered a scholarship to the University of Miami to an enlisted sailor and command denied his request for discharge to attend college and play football. Not exactly the same situation, but Carter isn’t a special case and many people have been denied opportunities as a result of military commitments.
