This “he’s wasting a spot” argument doesn’t seem valid to me. It’s not like he was gifted a spot at West Point…he earned it just like everyone else. And those dudes who didn’t get in could all still get commissions through ROTC or OCS if they wanted to. Once you’re active duty, no one cares where you went to become an officer.

Except he IS wasting spot because it stays vacant if someone quits after Affirmation before the start of their junior year. If your dream is playing in the NFL then go somewhere else and get commissioned later on.
