Have always been an Android user, so I guess I don't know what I'm missing.

Not a thing, I have used both.
My wife has a newer iPhone. She can communicate via imessage when service is sketchy, but I don't see any other benefit. She has to have it though, even though it really doesn't give her any benefit over what I use.
Lots more options for android than iPhone.
