Boeuf WMA Deer Trip

Does anyone on here have any advice for deer hunting on Boeuf WMA. I would like to make a trip up there for a few days before Christmas. I generally hunt Big Branch and the Pearl but wanted to go check out something different. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you bringing a boat? Atv?

There are lots of deer on boeuf. Much of
The place looks exactly the same.
If by atv go to the edge of the waterfowl impoundments They are very comfortable near water especially on levees
If by boat, hunt close to the boat. They parallel the bayous and river and the natural levees tend to be more thick and have a little bit different vegetation
If by foot, get online and look at soils maps and find the natural ridges out there. Or hunt the edges of the duck water. Lots of
Pigs out there
I will hunt a hot honey locust over almost any oak tree if you can find one

We are debating bringing an atv. Haven’t decided that yet. Would we be better off with on?

I’d recommend bringing a four wheeler, I recently purchased an acre of land that borders Beouf. I’ve hunted it for 15 years now. Crow field has the most deer, up north has the biggest deer in my opinion. Very dry year, deer are spread out ,not as easy as high water years. The time you are going is ideal. Good luck

I grew up in the area and will be there tomorrow morning for either sex. Like previously mentioned crow field area has the largest population and typically is easier hunting. I hunted that area a lot for 5-6 years and seen a lot of deer. Killed a few good bucks, however I’ve started focusing on areas that historically produce bigger bucks in the 150”+ range as that is my goal. Not to say there aren’t deer of that size down there but the habitat currently can’t support growing multiple deer of that size. There are plenty of quality bucks in vicinity though. What was suggested on focusing near the waterfowl impoundments is 100% legit, those deer will go to water when the pressure starts tomorrow. There is a road that cuts through the middle of the crow field that I have personally sat on year after year and seen as many as 30 deer a day. I will be happy answer any other questions you may have and hope you have some luck

Where is the crow field located? Is that the limited access area that is down towards the south end of the WMA? Looking at topo maps it seems like it is almost all flat except around the ponds and river, is that pretty much how it is?
Are there many places where you can see a decent ways in the wood or is it pretty grown up and thick? Are there generally many duck hunters out there that I would need to steer clear of? I appreciate the help. Wouldn't mind meeting up if you happen to be up there that week. Good luck out there tomorrow hope you shoot a giant.

Yes it is the limited access area on the southern end, you won’t get much info on the Topo map of that area as it’s all really flat or bottoms. It all floods when the river reaches 47’- 48’. As far as duck hunters it all depends on the water level.. if it stays dry you will be able to get inside the crow field levees itself but if the river gets up and over the levees it will fill the area even after river goes back down.

Much of it is wide open mature bottomland hardwoods. Gets thicker towards brakes and sloughs
A ridge out there is two feet elevation change

Did you have any luck this weekend for the either sex? Send me an email if you don't mind I have a few ideas I would like to bounce off of you. Jallen8289@yahoo.com

Do you think the river will flood the area after this rain? If so does it push the deer farther away from the duck impoundments and the river or does it not really affect them much?
