They are #8 in reality, but it creates geographic imbalance if they treat them as a top tier team. Then 5 of the 8 are in Eastern portion of the footprint and only 3 of 8 are in the West. That creates problems pairing the top teams. If A&M isn’t considered top tier, then they have to match LSU with 2 teams in the East and Texas has to play an Eastern team instead of Arkansas.
