Our Aussie ran into a truck once in the late 90s. She was chasing a squirrel and literally ran into the side of a passing truck. I took her to the vet to make sure she wasn't hurt. The vet, a young vet, said she had a heart murmur and left for a few minutes. She came back with a printout of their recommendations and the cost. They wanted to run several tests for a little over $500. Otherwise, the dog was fine. I told her I needed to think about that.
I called a family friend who was a vet and told him. He lived near my inlaws and told me to bring the dog the next time we came up (which was in two weeks). He also said to bring the printout. He checked the dog and said she might have a heart murmur, but if so, it was very faint -- and what were they planning on doing about it anyway?
He then went on a long rant about modern day vets (he was nearing retirement then) being taught to perform unnecessary tests and procedures just to make more money. My FiL, a retired large animal vet, agreed.
The dog lived a long, active life, and we found another vet.
