I know I sound defensive, but Atlanta is no different than any other US metro area of comparable size. The famous quote “America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland” has some truth to it. Urban sprawl is an American tradition, not unique to Atlanta. Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, etc. And if you don't like urban sprawl, you can live in the urban core of Atlanta and barely need a car if that's your thing. The Midtown/downtown part of Atlanta is as condensed with high rises as anywhere in the US outside of NYC. If you want a little more space but still walkable to everything you need, there are dozens of neighborhoods, even suburbs, that fit.

The dreaded 9-5 one hour interstate commute is for people who choose that life.

Or make that sacrifice for better schools and affordable real estate.
