What is the best way to kill the rats without ending up with a horrible smell of dead animals in the walls?

we had mice in our attic last year. pest control wanted something retarded like 3 grand to fix it. they said we had some sizeable holes around the roofline/attic where they could be getting in and our weepholes were too big. they wanted to fill those in some and fill the other "holes" and change out all of the insulation - which was obviously the big ticket item. wholly unneeded IMO. I bought some more mouse traps and filled them up in a few days. haven't heard/seen any sign of them since then. also shoved some copper mesh in the weepholes to try and prevent intrusion. 50 bucks?

I did try the bucket thing. there was mouse poop in the bucket but no mouse. so they were either hanging out eating the peanut butter and not spinning off or they were able to get down and back out of the bucket. WD-40 your spinning rod. and maybe do something to slick up the bucket.

but yeah. in my experience a few traps will take care of your issue unless it's a true infestation.

I had a business in downtown Tuscaloosa a number of years ago. A few doors down was a space that had been empty for probably 20 years. When it was sold and the contractor started doing demo we got a rat infestation. I mean rat, not a mouse. Things were probably 12" from nose to tail tip.

We bought some heavy duty snap traps that had a base made from a 1x4". Put out 4 one evening and returned the next morning to no traps. We never found them. I dont know where they went. We bought more traps and screwed them to the floor. You could hear that trap get triggered from 50 feet away. SNAP!!! Ended up killing 42 over the next 2 months.

We also found that a small tootsie roll squeezed onto the trigger, then covered with a little peanut butter was impossible for them to resist.

To the OP, good luck getting rid of them.
