There’s something going on.

You are witnessing what is going on on this very website. The temperature of the program—of all programs and almost every THING—now is taken by the very vocal and loud minority of fans posting on social media. And to a lesser extent, local media, specifically radio shows that have either call-ins or live chats. And that’s a terrible way to gauge anything unless it’s the exact thing you’re talking about (i.e. fans’ responses on social media). Because it’s so reactionary to the immediate goings-on—there is very little big picture perspectives online.

It’s human nature that the only people who care enough to put in the effort to sign up/sign-in and post or call-in, do so mainly to bitch. I’m one of the few posters on here who’s almost always positive regarding the team. I’ve defended Les, O, Kelly, Jamarcus, Jordan Jefferson, Emsminger, Daniels, even Alleva occasionally. BUT, I’m prompted by the negativity towards them and come off just as negative and angry as everybody else—my anger is just usually directed at posters who I think are being unreasonable or unfair, whatever, so I’m really the same. Most people typically have to be pissed to care enough to post. And it’s hard to remember this, but we don’t represent the vast majority of the fanbase.

T-Bob got ripped yesterday in a thread because he said there was a lot of pressure on Kelly to win Saturday against Napier and Florida. But nobody bothered to listen to what he actually said. He said he still believes in Kelly long-term, is a member of the “Cult of Kelly” and understands there is zero chance Kelly gets fired or is on the hot seat anytime soon. He was specifically talking about the reaction of the fans online and local media who wanted Napier over Kelly. So the “pressure” on Kelly to win isn’t even on him necessarily, it’s to prevent the negative online backlash that is sure to come with a loss. Kelly won’t even feel it himself, it’ll be local guys like TBob and Hester and Hanny and Moscona who have to deal with the overreaction of the fanatics who care/are pissed off enough to post or call in.

Btw, that SNAPS show with him and Aaron Murray is pretty good. Just a couple dudes talking college football not taking themselves too seriously. On Monday’s show for example, he even shouted out Tigerdroppings by showing a picture he got on here in the thread about that electro-magnetic thing that was aimed at Bech on the kickoff which made him drop it. He blamed it on that, but was obviously joking because he said it had to be true because he got it on here. It was actually pretty funny.

The hate he gets on here is ridiculous. He knows—and duly admits—that he’s a product of nepotism and wouldn’t have a career if he weren’t Bobby Hebert’s son. And he never talks about himself as a player unless directly asked about it. He knows he’s a character and his role is to be that, not someone who claims to have any sort of inside knowledge about what’s going on inside the program. He knows what’s going on online and that’s what he was speaking to in that instance and what Stephen A Smith is mistakenly referring to as representative of the actual program and most people’s feelings towards it.

Any time you go from a players coach to more of a hard arse there are always malcontents who prefer the old coach. That is not surprising if true. Remember when Leach took over at State and his first year he would say in post game press conferences for any players who don’t want to be there to leave. Venables is saying the same stuff right now in his OU pressers. We are in a rebuild. This stuff is par for the course.
