Or just use them in roles that aren't already defined. It's been a long time since I read Without Remorse but his description, while white, wasn't a big part of the story and John Clark has been a minor character at best in movies. I don't recall a big uproar about Michael Johnson being chosen for that role. Now it was a complete abortion of a movie but that was on the writers, not the fact that a black guy played the main character. Luther was an outstanding vehicle for Idris Elba and he didn't play a "black cop", he played a cop who happened to be black. Just cast people as characters, not characters defined by their skin tone.

Exactly. No one cares that original and well-written characters are black.
