Backpacking or camping near Juneau

Going to Juneau weekend after Labor Day. Want to camp one night somewhere?
I see there are trails that leave from rhe edge of town. Can I hike in a mile or two and camp here?
I have camped in bear country(glacier park and Yellowstone) but the population may be higher in Juneau. Most likely won't even bring food on a short pack trip like that. Or I do have a bear cannister I could bring.
There is a campground near Mendenhall glacier I could go to if I can't pack in somewhere. Thinking it wouldn't be that busy on a Monday night a week after labor day.
First trip to Alaska. Will be my 49th state to visit. I've camped in 25 of them so far and want to spend at least one night outdoors. Looking forward to it.

There are millions of acres of National Forest, plus several campgrounds. One thing maybe to consider, is a DNR cabin rental ($35/night) or AK State Park cabin. LINK

Hell yeah. You can camp on the beach, woods, etc.
Consider Mt Roberts or Mt Juneau downtown too.

Yeah, bears are everywhere. I see them downtown every day..lol. Youre gonna need to put food in scent proof bags. Buy bear spray.

Has one of the most beautiful views of any normal campground. there's also a nice trail system at West Glacier where the campground is located.
There's also one at Auke Rec, about a mile north of the Ferry Terminal.

Thanks Roger. Mt Juneau or along the coast sounds great.

Theres a nice trail that runs from behind downtown and up to to SIlverbow Basin. Mt Juneau, Mt Roberts, The Flume and Granite Creek trails all branch off of the main trail. Worth exploring, there's some old mine shafts, and you can get up above treeline really quickly.
This is Granite Creek, I was up there about a month ago. Its one of my favorite hikes.

Do you fish while hiking/camping Roger?

I was looking at 10 day forecast. Does it rain everyday?

Sometimes. Depends on time of year, etc.
Its going to be rainy the next few days, an "atmospheric river" supposedly. Doesn't hurt outdoor activity, but does mess with the views and scenery.

Theres a couple of decent eateries in the same building, really cool old facility.
That's the place people go when the bars close. All the night crawlers show up there. Its pretty good Russian dumplings. Seems like its been there forever and it's very popular with the summer tourism workers.
