Rondell Mealey...how good was this guy?

Alright old timers, how good was this guy? Admittedly I’m not old enough to have watched him play, but he’s always been portrayed to me as one of the best backs to come through LSU. I ran across his Wikipedia page out of boredom and was surprised to see he never rushed for more than 664 yards in a season and only averaged 3.7 ypc his senior year.

Kevin Faulk and he got hurt I think his Jr. year. He was a very good back but not as good as Faulk.

Backup to Faulk is why his numbers were down. Anytime he was called on to be the guy he came thru. Like in the 97 independence bowl when Faulk was injured he put up over 200 yds.

Best backs at LSU? Not close. Was a very talented player that had a short NFL stint, but he was about as good an RB as Alfred Blue. Guys like Steven Ridley and Jeremy Hill are well beyond what Mealey was, but he is looked at fondly by Tiger fans because he was part of the Bring back the Magic revival.

Had that great independence bowl performance in Faulks absence. Was really always a #2 back but he was very good in that role and returned kicks for us as well. Not a great player but a key guy in helping turn the program around in the mid to late 90s. Also a good dude.

Because the team was a shitburger and the Booty led passing game maybe the worst in LSU history. It's crazy that Booty threw almost 5 times more passes than Ro and Nall when he was completing less than 50% and almost had a 3 to 1 INT to TD ratio.

It wasn’t really his fault. That 99 line was the worst I can remember since I’ve been really following LSU, going back to the mid 90s. Seems like they had injury issues, on top of a lack of depth/ talent.
Mealey had a TD run against UGA that was about as tough as it got because it seemed like their whole Dline was in the backfield just after the snap. That was the game we lost on a failed 2 point conversion.

Faneca was also pulling and decleating their inside linebackers like they were little kids. Idk if there are highlights anywhere without watching a full game on YouTube but he was unreal.

His senior year we fielded one of the worst Olines in our history. Let was the reason for the 3.7

Great back! Just played at the same time as Faulk

Booty was an abomination, wish he’d have been better at baseball. Set us back a few years.

Mealy was a very good back?

He was a slasher, I compare him to Alfred Blue

Mealey was a solid back. He wasn't nearly as good as Faulk though and not one of the best LSU has had.

He was the third best of this group.

Kevin Faulk was in front of him that's why not as many touches as he would have gotten anywhere else in the country. But he showed up big time and spanked that Fighting Irish arse in the weed Wacker snow storm Independence Bowl. Yeah man, Rondelle was Da man dat night.

The Diesel man. What could have been. That was my JR year at LSU.
