Are any of the online places good places to buy a pre-owned car? Or would going to a car dealer or some other place be a better idea? I wish that I could find a garage kept grandma car. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

car gurus is a good way to search

facebook marketplace is THE place everyone posts vehicles for sale.

if you dont search FB marketplace then you arent serious about looking, and you should just go to the nearest used car lot and buy whatever they have there.

If it's late model and under warranty, the risk to online is the car not living up to your visually expectations or may smell like BO or smokey. If older, I would buy from a local dealer with a good reputation. If there is a problem with the car, you are more likely to get help form the dealership if you are doing sales and service with business with them. You can often take them to a third party to get inspected too.
