We file jointly and have 3 dependents. We don’t itemize, so the taxes might not be awful. But I sit down annually and take a holistic look at all of our investments as well as our expenses. Doing the financial rebalancing for my husband’s retirement accounts takes longer than everything else together because he always forgets his login information, and I can’t technically call Vanguard on his behalf. It frustrates the hell out of me. I would pull my hair out if I had to manage another account in his name.
I guess it comes down to personality types. My husband is the smart one really. He decided to marry a woman with a financial background who he can trust, and he doesn’t even think about it at all. He doesn’t even know where all of our money is. A separate account would become my headache, but I’m sure it can work in some relationships.
