Populism is an effective combatant to Marxism.
And American populism, as expressed through the Republican Party currently, avoids one of the major pitfalls of classical populism in that we have a Democratic Republic.

Populism appeases the lowest common denominator and demonizes the successful. Its an endless set of talking points and impossible to deal with on a rational basis. Populist rhetoric leads directly to marxism or other forms of collectivism.
Its rooted in fear and insecurity.
